Biography

Asoke Kumar Mukerji (born December 1955) was Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations from April 2013 to December 2015. He is a former Indian diplomat and writer. Joined in July 1978, he is an former IFS officer. His diplomatic career started with his posting in Belgrade and Washington DC. After that he became Counsul General of India in Soviet Central Asia in June 1990. During the period of transition following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he helped transform India’s relations with five newly independent countries of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. There is a long list of Mukerji’s vital role as India’s Ambassador to various countries throughout his decades spanning career.
Mukerji has been a public speaker at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Rochester, Dartmouth College, at the London Conference on Cyberspace and at the public commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in San Francisco.
