Biography

(Born 31st July, 1954) He is a former Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim Constituency. He completed his graduation in chemical engineering and thereafter did P.G.D.M. and Eisenhower Fellow
Educated at IIT, Kanpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He has travelled over 40 countries in his lifetime.
Mr. Prem Das Rai started his career at Bank of America, but soon realised that he could use his potential for the development of his own country. Hence he came back to join Sikkim Flour Mills in Sikkim. He also served as Managing Director of the Sikkim Milk Union (1983–85), Chairman of Sikkim Industrial Development and Investment Corporation Limited (SIDICO) & Sikkim Scheduled Tribes and All Other Backward Classes Financial Development Corporation (SABCCO, 1999 – 2004), Founding Chairman of the Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Sikkim (ECOSS) (2001-2009), and CEO (Northeast India) of BASIX (2008), India’s eminent micro-finance and livelihood promotion institution.
Motivated and encouraged by his mentor, Shri Pawan Chamling he started his political career by joining Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party in 1993-1994. Later Mr. Rai also chaired at Other Backwards Classes Association and as President of the Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh (AKRS).
He was also invited by various institutions like Yale, Oxford, Harvard and Princeton Universities where he took leadership courses. Mr. Prem Das Rai has been awarded Eisenhower Fellowship in 2000 for his contribution to the edconomic and industrial growth of Sikkim.
